Profil

ReKava is revolutionizing local recycling by tackling a surprisingly significant environmental issue: coffee grounds waste. Our mission is to rescue the tons of coffee grounds that currently end up in mixed waste streams or are sent to incinerators, contributing to unnecessary landfill and pollution. We provide an innovative waste collection service tailored to cafes, businesses, and other institutions, utilizing an eco-friendly approach that prioritizes sustainability and efficiency.

Our collection service is realized through the use of electric cargo bikes, a green alternative that reduces our carbon footprint. At the heart of our operation are "Smart Bins" equipped with integrated sensors that monitor the fill level and status of the bins in real-time. These smart technologies enable more efficient waste management by signaling to the cargo bike drivers, via a dedicated app, when the coffee grounds are ready for collection and transportation to community gardens.

Once delivered to community gardens, the coffee grounds find a second life. One popular use is as a nutrient-rich substrate for growing oyster mushrooms, demonstrating a practical and ecological application of urban waste. The integrated sensor technology in the "Smart Bins" not only optimizes collection routes and reduces fuel usage but also supports organizations in achieving their sustainability goals. Each organization receives a transparent, monthly report detailing the amount of coffee grounds diverted from landfill, reinforcing our commitment to ecological and economic efficiency.

Building on the success of our collection service, ReKava has expanded its offerings this year to include solutions for smaller companies and households. We have introduced "growkits," which allow individuals to repurpose their own coffee grounds to cultivate oyster mushrooms at home. In collaboration with Plastia, a company based in Vysočina, we have developed a new type of growkit that incorporates a dye derived from coffee grounds. This process, known as cascade recycling, transforms coffee grounds into a natural, circular colorant for plastics, referred to as masterbatch. This innovative approach not only reduces waste but also introduces a sustainable, eco-friendly option for coloring plastics.

ReKava is committed to advancing the circular economy through practical, creative solutions that make waste valuable again. Whether through our efficient collection service or our new growkits, we are dedicated to helping communities and businesses turn coffee waste into a resource, promoting sustainability and innovation at every step.

At ReKava, we are dedicated to extending our sustainable coffee grounds recycling solutions beyond our local community. We now offer a scalable suite of software and hardware solutions designed to enable other European cities and organizations to efficiently manage coffee grounds collection. Our technology-driven approach ensures that coffee grounds are effectively diverted from waste streams and repurposed for beneficial use, contributing to a more circular economy.

MycoWall

A mushroom wall is a vertical structure that allows the cultivation of oyster mushrooms (or other edible mushrooms) on a wall or a freestanding frame. It consists of modular pouches or bags filled with a coffee grounds substrate into which oyster mushroom spawn is mixed. The leftover substrate after harvest can be composted or used as soil for further cultivation, thereby closing the circular material cycle.
